Happily chatting away about architecture and recent design projects he has been involved in, it is difficult to imagine that Andy Watson is an architectural graduate, not ten years into his career.

Starting his architectural career straight from school, the trials and tribulations that come with endless years of study saw Andy complete only three years before heading overseas. As is often the way for kiwi travellers, Andy met and formed a close friendship with fellow Cantabrian Jono Ross half way across the world, and ended up back in Christchurch setting up creative communications company Deflux. While Jono still remains at the forefront of the company, Andy has taken a step back. “I woke up one morning and thought today is the day.”

It was a day that Andy didn’t think would happen, but he and his now wife Margo made the move to Auckland for Andy to complete his study. Two years later they were back in Christchurch, married, pregnant and ready to build; “it was the year of everything.” It was also the year that Andy began at architectural practice Modern Architecture Partners (+MAP) as a graduate and took on the task of designing his first home, for the most discerning clients – himself and Margo.

The project was undertaken by Andy in his spare time, but with constant understanding and the odd piece of advice from +MAP. ”They were great; they gave me the time and support I needed.” After a nine month process of planning and designing the home on paper, Andy turned to old school friend Avon Dickie from Avon Dickie Construction to bring the picture to life. For Andy the selection of a builder was simple: “I believe it’s important to surround yourself with good people who you can trust, and I knew instantly who I wanted to manifest my vision.” Andy credits Avon as integral to keeping him on his toes and ensuring the final result was “sharp”.
